Leadership is a tremendously current topic. Fortunately, more and more is written and talked about on the subject. But unfortunately, on most occasions’ leadership is spoken or written without any scientific rigor. For this reason, I always like to look at Gallup‘s rigorous studies on leadership.
In this sense, Gallup has scientifically discovered THE 7 UNIVERSAL BEHAVIORS THAT GREAT LEADERS HAVE and directly affect the achievement of great results. There are 7 behaviors that play an important role in creating great work teams. These behaviors can be the difference between an average leader and an exceptional leader. For this reason, I wanted to share them with you.
- THEY BUILD RELATIONSHIPS. Relationships are a central element in the development of good leadership. Great leaders create personal relationships of trust with their environment (colleagues, customers, and others). In this way, through the creation of powerful personal connections, they can increase their teams’ commitment, promoting learning, creativity, and innovation.
- THEY DEVELOP PEOPLE. The development of people is a priority for good leaders. They must invest quality time in their people, fostering a culture of development in which leaders act as coaches or trainers.
- THEY LEAD THE CHANGE. In an increasingly changing environment, leaders must lead the change. For this, it is essential that they offer a vision that motivates their collaborators and clarifies how to achieve it. They must involve their team in the commitment to change, facilitating environments that encourage the development of new ideas.
- THEY INSPIRE OTHERS. Great leaders celebrate the achievements of their team members and recognize their individual contributions. They inspire by sharing their vision for the future. They explain to employees why their contributions are important and give meaning to their work.
- THEY THINK CRITICALLY. Great leaders are always looking for information, they always want to learn and improve. To do this, they usually surround themselves with professionals who help them improve their self-awareness and critical thinking through coaching and personal development.
- THEY COMMUNICATE CLEARLY. It is only possible to lead successfully if the leader is able to communicate clearly. Leaders must ask questions and actively listen. Communication should serve to create meaningful connections.
- THEY CREATE ACCOUNTABILITY. Great leaders create a culture of accountability. And this culture must start from the top down. That is, leaders must set an example and exercise their own accountability first. They must also define with their collaborators their levels of accountability.
I wrote to you in several posts that, according to Gallup, the leader of a team influences more than 70% of the variation in the results achieved by the team. Having good leaders is essential to have great results. And you have been able to learn 7 powerful behaviors that great leaders perform. I hope they are useful to you. And remember that, as Stephen Covey said, “what you do has a far greater impact than what you say.”
