2 of the professionals I most admire, and I follow them consistently, often say “Get comfortable with discomfort”. They are the great Tony Robbins, considered the number one coach in the world, and Michael Port, creator of Book Yourself Solid and Heroic Public Speaking.
We all crave comfort. It feels safe, familiar, and predictable. But wHAT IF I TOLD YOU THAT TRUE GROWTH AND HAPPINESS LIE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF COMFORT? That’s right, in the land of discomfort.
Think about it: without a little discomfort, we’d never push ourselves to learn new skills, take on challenges, or reach our full potential. We’d get stuck in routines, bored with the same old, same old.
Here’s the thing: discomfort is inevitable. It’s part of life. But how we react to it makes all the difference. We can either run from it and stay stagnant, or we can learn to get comfortable with discomfort. As Tony Robbins usually says, “Learn to convert the discomfort of discipline into the satisfaction of personal growth”.
So, HOW DO WE DO THAT?
1. Shift Your Mindset:
It all starts with your perception. Instead of seeing discomfort as an enemy, view it as an opportunity for growth. Embrace a growth mindset, believing that you can learn and improve through challenges.
2. Take Calculated Risks:
Don’t wait for discomfort to find you. Start small by taking calculated risks that push you outside your comfort zone. Try a new activity, speak up in a meeting, or learn a new skill. As you conquer these small challenges, your confidence will grow, and you’ll be ready to tackle bigger ones.
3. Reframe Your Discomfort:
Instead of fearing discomfort, see it as a sign you’re on the right track. It means you’re stepping outside your comfort zone and growing as a person. Reframe the negative feelings associated with discomfort into excitement for the possibilities that lie ahead.
4. Focus on the Benefits:
Remind yourself of the amazing things that come from embracing discomfort. Increased confidence, greater resilience, and a sense of accomplishment are just a few of the rewards that await you on the other side.
5. Celebrate Your Wins:
Acknowledge and celebrate your victories, no matter how small. Every time you step outside your comfort zone, you’re achieving something great. Take a moment to appreciate your progress and fuel your motivation for the next challenge.
Remember, getting comfortable with discomfort is a journey, not a destination. There will be setbacks, but don’t let them discourage you. Keep moving forward, and you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish. As Michael Port usually says, “We need to be willing to be comfortable with discomfort in order to grow”.
