In this post, I’m suggesting that you take advantage of your vacation to rest and reflect on whether you’re in the career place you want to be—just six pillars to update the version that the market and those around you have of you.
Take advantage of your vacation to reset: 6 ways to reposition yourself

August arrives, we slow down, and the usual rhythm of emails, meetings, and calls comes to a screeching halt. For a few days, vacation offers us the mental space that daily life steals from us during the rest of the year. It’s the perfect time to rest, of course, but also to reflect.

With the perspective that distance provides, a recurring question often arises: Am I where I want to be professionally, or is it time to take the next step?

When we think about changing course or taking a leap in our career, we usually imagine big changes: a grandiose LinkedIn post announcing a “new stage,” a radical website redesign, or a drastic title change. However, true professional repositioning doesn’t require a “big splash.” It’s not about making noise, but about strategically building evidence until the facts speak for themselves.

If you want to use these weeks of rest to think about how you want the market to perceive you upon your return, here are 6 SILENT SIGNALS WORTH WORKING ON TO REPOSITION YOURSELF AFTER THE HOLIDAYS:

  1. THE VOCABULARY YOU USE. Words categorize us before anyone even reads our bio. Calling yourself an “advisor” instead of a “consultant,” or a “strategist” instead of a “marketer,” isn’t a matter of ego: they are small language choices that indicate what room you think you’re in and what kind of value you bring. Heading into September, be intentional with the terms you use in your proposals, meetings, and profile.
  2. THE PROJECTS YOU ACCEPT. What you do speaks volumes more than any headline. If you want to be seen differently in the new academic year, your “yes” or “no” filter needs to change. Start accepting meetings, collaborations, or projects that feed your new professional identity, even if they weren’t on your radar before. What you reject also defines your positioning.
  3. THE PROBLEMS YOU ADDRESS. What you write about, what you post on social media, and what topics you discuss in meetings define the “mental folder” where people store you. If your goal for the coming year is to position yourself as a leader in key areas, the shortest path is to start speaking, sharing your opinions, and writing systematically about them.
  4. THE QUESTIONS YOU ASK. People immediately notice what you focus on. The questions you ask in a committee, to a client, or in an interview reveal your true interests better than any prepared speech. Asking sharper, more strategic, and future-oriented questions is, by far, the most underrated repositioning move.
  5. THE PEOPLE YOU ASSOCIATE WITH. Partnerships are the fastest shortcut to changing the market’s perception of you. Who you collaborate with, who you organize a project with, or who you are seen with professionally sends a crystal-clear message about your level and your aspirations. Use the summer to think about who you should partner with next year.
  6. THE EVENTS YOU ATTEND. The forums where you appear, the associations you participate in, and the circles you move in are clear signs of belonging. If you want to be seen at a different level after your vacation, you need to start being present in different places. Review your schedule from the past year and decide which environments you’d like to join starting in September.

CONCLUSION: REPOSITIONING ISN’T ANNOUNCED, IT ACCUMULATES.

We often think that to reposition ourselves professionally, we have to make a big, formal announcement. But the reality is that positioning isn’t proclaimed; it’s demonstrated.

Use your free time during this vacation not to design a big personal marketing campaign, but to reflect on these six pillars. Consistency in your words, your projects, and your circles after the summer will be the most powerful—and elegant—way to update the image that the market and your network have of you.

Happy holidays and happy reflecting!
