As you already know I am passionate about leadership and by professional deformation I am always investigating what are the characteristics or qualities that define great leaders. In this post I would like to talk about the ones identified by the well-known publicist David Ogilvy.
The 10 Characteristics of Great Leaders according to David Ogilvy

David Ogilvy, an iconic figure in the world of advertising, identified ten essential characteristics that define great leaders. These qualities are not only applicable in the field of advertising but are also relevant in any area where leadership and creativity are crucial.

  1. HIGH SENSE OF PERSONAL ETHICS: Great leaders maintain high ethical and moral standards. Their integrity and honesty inspire trust and respect in their teams and clients. As Ogilvy says, “Always tell the truth, but make the truth fascinating.”
  2. GREATNESS AND BROAD VISION: They have a broad and ambitious vision. They do not limit themselves to the immediate but think long-term and about the global impact of their decisions. Ogilvy emphasizes being ambitious in talent acquisition, stating, “If each of us hires people who are bigger than we are, we shall become a company of giants.”
  3. ABILITY TO WORK UNDER PRESSURE AND RESILIENCE TO FAILURES: Effective leaders handle stress well and are not easily discouraged by setbacks. They see failures as opportunities to learn and improve.
  4. BRILLIANT MIND: Intelligence and mental sharpness are crucial. Creative leaders must be quick and efficient in their thinking and decision-making. Ogilvy highlighted, “I prefer the discipline of knowledge to the anarchy of ignorance.”
  5. ABILITY TO WORK HARD AND ENERGY TO DO SO EVEN LATE AT NIGHT: Dedication and energy are fundamental. Great leaders are willing to put in the necessary effort, even if it means working long hours. As Ogilvy says, “No one ever died of hard work.”
  6. CHARISMA, CHARM, AND PERSUASION: Charisma and the ability to persuade are essential for motivating and guiding teams. Charismatic leaders inspire and attract others with their enthusiasm and confidence.
  7. A TOUCH OF UNORTHODOXY AND INNOVATION: Creativity and the willingness to challenge the status quo are vital. Innovative leaders constantly seek new ways of doing things and are not afraid to break conventions.
  8. COURAGE TO MAKE DIFFICULT DECISIONS: Bold and difficult decision-making is an integral part of leadership. Great leaders do not avoid tough decisions but face them with courage and determination.
  9. ENTHUSIASM AND CONFIDENCE: Enthusiasm is contagious. Leaders who show passion and confidence in their work inspire their teams to follow their example and strive for excellence.
  10. SENSE OF HUMOR: A good sense of humor helps maintain a positive work environment and relieve stress. Leaders who can laugh at themselves and difficult situations create a more pleasant and productive atmosphere. Ogilvy says, “The best ideas come as jokes. Make your thinking as funny as possible.”

I conclude with a quote that perfectly summarizes David Ogilvy‘s vision of leadership:

“The most effective leader is the one who satisfies the psychological needs of his followers.”

I also recommend two books by David Ogilvy that I love:
