The essence of strategy is deciding what not to do

In today's post, and to start this year effectively, I'll tell you why it's just as important to set new goals, as it is to forget the ones you're not going to focus on.
The essence of strategy is deciding what not to do

As we begin a new year, many of us set goals and objectives to improve our lives. However, amidst the excitement of doing more, we often forget a crucial lesson from American academic and renowned global strategy expert, Michael Porter: “The essence of strategy is deciding what not to do.”

This quote invites me to reflect on the importance of selection and focus. Instead of trying to do everything, Porter reminds us that an effective strategy involves making conscious decisions about which activities, projects, or habits we will not continue to pursue.

Here are SOME REASONS WHY I FIRMLY BELIEVE YOU SHOULD CONSIDER STOPPING CERTAIN ACTIVITIES this year:

  1. AVOID OVERLOAD: Trying to do too much can lead to burnout and a decrease in the quality of our work. I wrote about this in my previous post “Watch Out for Burnout.” By deciding what not to do, you can focus your energies on what truly matters and avoid excessive overload.
  2. CLARITY AND FOCUS: By eliminating unnecessary tasks, you gain clarity about your priorities. This allows you to dedicate more time and resources to activities that truly contribute to your goals. So think carefully about which activities and actions align with your objectives and which do not. As Michael Porter says, “You can’t be all things to all people.”
  3. IMPROVED EFFICIENCY: Deciding what not to do helps you simplify processes and eliminate distractions. This not only improves your efficiency but also allows you to be more effective in your actions. You know the saying, “Less is more.” In many areas, doing less can be very beneficial.
  4. FOSTERS INNOVATION: By freeing up time and resources, you can explore new ideas and opportunities that you might not have considered otherwise. This can lead to significant innovations and advancements. Michael Porter comments that “Innovation is the central issue in economic prosperity.”

In summary, at the start of this new year, instead of just adding more to your to-do list, take a moment to consider what you can eliminate. Strategy is not just about doing more, but about doing the right things. Deciding what not to do can be the key to a more productive and satisfying year.

So, take the time to think about what you will stop doing, as Michael Porter himself comments,

“Strategic thinking rarely happens spontaneously.”
