Por qué necesitas un coach 090724

One of my favorite TED Talks ever is this “Want to Get Great at Something? Get a Coach,” by Atul Gawande.  Atul is a surgeon and a great writer. In the talk, he delves into the transformative power of coaching, drawing from his own experiences as a surgeon and beyond. I want to share with you a summary of the key points Gawande discusses and why his message is so compelling.

THE VALUE OF COACHING

Atul Gawande starts by challenging the common perception that coaching is only for athletes or beginners. He argues that coaching is a powerful tool for anyone striving to improve, no matter their skill level or field. Gawande explains that even professionals at the peak of their careers can benefit from an outside perspective that helps them see their blind spots and push their boundaries.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH COACHING

Gawande shares his personal journey as a surgeon, where he sought the help of a coach to improve his surgical skills. Despite being experienced and highly skilled, he found that having a coach observe his work and provide feedback led to significant improvements in his performance. This personal anecdote underscores the idea that no one is too good for a coach; there is always room for growth.

THE ROLE OF A COACH

According to Gawande, a coach’s role is to provide perspective and offer constructive feedback. They help individuals recognize areas where they can improve and suggest specific changes to enhance performance. This process involves a continuous cycle of observation, feedback, and adjustment, leading to incremental and sustained improvement over time.

BROADER IMPLICATIONS OF COACHING

Gawande extends the discussion beyond surgery, highlighting how coaching can be beneficial in various fields such as education, music, and business. He cites examples of teachers, musicians, and CEOs who have successfully used coaching to elevate their performance. This broad applicability demonstrates that the principles of coaching are universally valuable.

THE IMPACT OF COACHING ON PERFORMANCE

One of the most compelling parts of Gawande’s talk is the evidence he presents showing the tangible benefits of coaching. He shares data and stories illustrating how coaching leads to better outcomes, whether it’s improved surgical success rates, higher student achievement, or enhanced organizational performance. These examples make a strong case for the effectiveness of coaching in driving excellence.

OVERCOMING RESISTANCE TO COACHING

Gawande acknowledges that many people resist the idea of coaching, often due to a fear of criticism or a belief that they don’t need help. He argues that embracing vulnerability and being open to feedback are crucial for growth. By shifting the mindset from viewing coaching as a sign of weakness to seeing it as a path to excellence, individuals can unlock their full potential.

CONCLUSION: EMBRACING THE COACHING MINDSET

In conclusion, Atul Gawande’s TED Talk is a powerful reminder that no matter where we are in our journey, there is always room for improvement. Coaching provides the guidance and perspective needed to reach new heights. Whether you are an athlete, a professional, or someone looking to improve in any area of life, finding a coach could be the key to unlocking your full potential. Embrace the coaching mindset, and you might be surprised by how far you can go.

I finish with a quote from Atul Gawande that perfectly describes his way of thinking:

“Improving is possible. It takes diligence. It takes moral clarity. It takes ingenuity. And above all, it takes a willingness to try”.
