The three pillars of Executive Presence

In this post, I will try to explain what executive presence is and why it is so important, and I will talk about its three main pillars.
The three pillars of Executive Presence

I recently had the good fortune to read the book “Executive Presence”  written by leadership and inclusion expert Sylvia Ann Hewlett. I found it to be an interesting book based on the idea that EXECUTIVE PRESENCE is an intangible quality that distinguishes people in the business world. It’s that aura of confidence, authority, and charisma that makes people take notice when someone with this executive presence walks into a room. While it may seem elusive, Sylvia Ann explains that EXECUTIVE PRESENCE CAN BE BROKEN DOWN INTO THREE KEY PILLARS: GRAVITAS, COMMUNICATION, AND APPEARANCE.

  • GRAVITAS (THE WAY YOU ACT): Gravitas was one of the Roman virtues that society most appreciated. Today it acquires the meaning of an ethical sense, of seriousness, severity, and dignity. It connotes a personality that has to do with how you carry yourself, the confidence you show, and the respect you inspire. It is an intangible quality that makes people trust you and believe in your leadership abilities. The Gravitas concept covers aspects such as:
    • Confidence: the power you must trust your abilities and decisions without being arrogant.
    • Composure: the ability to remain calm under pressure and in challenging situations.
    • Judgment: the ability to make sound decisions based on experience and knowledge.
    • Integrity: the ability to act ethically and demonstrate consistency in your actions.

Developing Gravitas takes time and experience. It’s about building a track record of success, showing resilience in the face of challenges, and earning the respect of others. As Pearl Zhu, an executive leadership expert, says, “The gravitas of a leader is like the clarity of a diamond.”

  • COMMUNICATION (THE WAY YOU SPEAK): Effective communication is crucial to convey your ideas, inspire others, and build relationships. It’s not just about what you say, but how you say it. Key aspects of communication include:
    • Clarity: the ability to express your thoughts and ideas clearly and concisely.
    • Persuasion: the ability to convince others to see things from your perspective or to act according to what you want.
    • Active listening: this is about paying attention to the points of view of others and showing empathy.
    • Non-verbal communication: the ability to use body language, gestures, and facial expressions to reinforce your message.

Improving your communication skills requires training, practice, and feedback. Whether it’s public speaking, writing, or interpersonal interactions, honing your communication skills can greatly improve your executive presence. As James Humes – presidential speechwriter in the United States – says, “The art of communication is the language of leadership.”

  • APPEARANCE (THE WAY YOU LOOK): While it may seem superficial, appearance plays an important role in executive presence. Your appearance is often the first thing people notice about you and can influence their perceptions of your professionalism, competence, and attention to detail. Key aspects of the appearance include:
    • Professional Dress: dress appropriately for your industry and position.
    • Grooming: maintain a clean and polished appearance, including hair, makeup, and personal hygiene.
    • Body language: includes many elements, including standing and sitting confidently, maintaining eye contact, and offering a firm handshake.

While appearance is important, it is essential to remember that it is only one piece of the puzzle. A polished appearance can enhance your executive presence, but it must be backed by gravitas and communication skills to make a true impact. As German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld used to say, “A respectable appearance is enough to make people care about your soul.”

In conclusion, EXECUTIVE PRESENCE IS A MULTIFACETED QUALITY THAT COMBINES GRAVITAS, COMMUNICATION, AND APPEARANCE.

By focusing on these three pillars and continually working to develop and improve them, you can improve your executive presence and position yourself for success in your career.

I end with a quote from Sylvia Ann Hewlett that perfectly summarizes the central idea of this post:

“No man or woman can get an important position, a big deal or develop great leadership without a powerful combination of confidence, poise, and authenticity.”
